Learn about who we are, where we come from, and the people who lead and serve our community.
Bor is the capital of Jonglei State in South Sudan, situated along the eastern bank of the White Nile. It is the heartland of the Bor Dinka people β one of the largest and most distinguished ethnic groups in South Sudan.
The land of Bor is defined by its vast green plains, the life-giving waters of the Nile, and a deep connection between the people and their cattle. Bor is not just a place on a map β it is a spiritual home, a cultural identity, and a proud heritage that travels with every Bor person wherever they go in the world.
Through decades of civil war, displacement, and hardship, the name Bor has remained a symbol of resilience, dignity, and unity.
The Bor Dinka are known for their tall stature, proud culture, deep spirituality, and a tradition of strong community leadership. The Bor people are deeply rooted in values of respect for elders, care for family, and collective responsibility for one another.
Music, dance, cattle, and storytelling are at the heart of Bor culture. The Dinka language connects generations and carries centuries of wisdom, poetry, and identity. To be from Bor is to carry a heritage that is rich, ancient, and deeply meaningful.
Like many South Sudanese communities, the Bor people began arriving in Canada in significant numbers following the brutal civil wars that devastated South Sudan. Families were separated, homes were destroyed, and an entire generation was forced to rebuild their lives in new lands.
Canada opened its doors to South Sudanese refugees and immigrants, and today Bor community members can be found in cities across the country β from Calgary and Edmonton to Toronto, Ottawa, and beyond.
Despite the distance from home, the Bor community in Canada has maintained its identity, its traditions, and its deep bonds of solidarity. We gather, we celebrate, we mourn together, and we support one another β because that is what Bor people do.
For years, our community has relied on scattered WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, and word of mouth to stay connected. Events were shared as flyers, donations were collected in cash, and important announcements were lost in noisy group chats.
This platform was built to give the Bor community in Canada one dignified, organized, and permanent digital home. A place where our history is preserved, our leaders are honored, our events are managed professionally, and our fundraising is transparent and trusted.
This is not just a website. This is our community, online.
